the portraits are structured around orange juice plastic bottles. Hard edged glass is molded around bendable and flexible shapes. It does support in a way, but it weights on those flimsy skulls as well. I wanted to pick an item that is intimately familiar and is handled frequently. that’s why orange juice bottles were my choice instead of water bottles that get emptied faster. The skulls are shaped with hot gun, they are not pristine and uniform like they just got of the conveyer belt. they acquire a glimpse of identity through that experience, but still not enough to make up a story. Enter glass. Cast, it servers as a base and can provide some facial/sculptural elements, painted and abraded it tells stories just like miles of stained glass windows have been doing it for centuries in cathedrals and churches.
